Greene stars as Titans take series over Jackals

Ottawa, ON – Tyrus Greene’s 5-for-5 performance guided the Ottawa Titans (30-17) to a convincing 11-6 victory over the New Jersey Jackals on Thursday night.

Left-hander David Gauthier (ND, 1-2) took the ball for the Titans in the series finale, with the Jackals jumping on the board early. After Jason Agresti singled with one out, Dalton Combs put the visitors on the board with a double to the corner in right.

Following an Alfredo Marte single, Justin Wylie scored a pair with a base hit, making it 3-0 Jackals after a half-inning.

Tyrus Greene got the Titans on the board with a double to the gap in right-centre, plating Taylor Wright to get the Titans on the board in the bottom of the second.

The home side put the momentum in their favour in the third, sending 12 to the dish, plating six runs on five hits. Jackie Urbaez, Jason Dicochea, Clay Fisher, and Greene all drove in runs off Jackals righty Charles Cywin (loss, 0-1) and lefty Matt Valin.

Up 7-3 entering the fourth, Joe Simone plated a Josh Rehwaldt double to get a run back, ending Gauthier’s night on the hill after three and two-thirds.

Manager Bobby Brown executed the “Ohtani rule” on Thursday, as Gauthier hit seventh in the order. The Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Quebec native drove in a run in the fourth, making it 8-4.

With two-on and two out in the sixth, Jacob Talamante plated Greene with a base-hit up the middle, making it 9-4.

For good measure in the eighth, Fisher and Talamante added two more against former Titan Zack LeBlanc, pushing the lead to 11-4. Talamante now has three RBI in his last three games, while Fisher adds a trio of RBI in his return to the lineup for the first time since June 10.

Jack Alkire (win, 1-3), Gavin Sonnier, and Nelson Gonzalez contributed for four and a third of shutout baseball in relief of Gauthier in the series finale, as the bullpen sent it to the ninth for Kevin Escorcia.

Alfredo Marte added a pair by belting his tenth homer of the season, taking Escorcia over the wall for a two-run shot. The homer was the first long ball Escorcia had allowed since May 20 at Florence.

Following the series win, the Ottawa Titans open a four-game series with the Empire State Greys on Friday, with a twin-bill. Game one is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. from Ottawa Stadium, with game two commencing 30 minutes after the opener.
