Solid pitching earns Titans split in twin-bill

Trois-Rivières, QC – Playing in their third doubleheader in under two weeks, the Ottawa Titans (35-19) used terrific outings from starters Zac Westcott to win game one 6-2, then got six innings from Tyler Jandron in a 1-0 loss in the nightcap.

Game 1 – Ottawa 6, Trois-Rivières 2

Westcott (win, 7-1) tossed the first complete game for the Titans on the season, going seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, walking one, and striking out three for his team-leading seventh win of the campaign.

The Titans used a three-run top of the first against right-hander Sam Belisle-Springer (loss, 6-4) to take an early 3-0 lead. Jackie Urbaez led off the game with a double the opposite way and came into score on a Clay Fisher RBI single. Four batters later, Tyrus Greene plated a pair with a base hit.

As Westcott sailed through three, the first two reached in the top of the fourth as Jackie Urbaez cashed in a run with an RBI groundout. Fisher followed Urbaez’s groundout with a two-run shot to left, making it 6-0.

Following a Ricardo Sanchez leadoff single in the fifth, Canice Ejoh lifted a two-run shot of his own over the short porch in left to get the Aigles within four.

Looking for the complete game, Wescott got an always tough-out in LP Pelletier to ground into the game ending 5-4-3 double play to secure the win.

Game 2 – Trois-Rivières 1, Ottawa 0

Sam Poliquin (win, 4-3) and Tyler Jandron (loss, 4-3) went toe-to-toe in the nightcap, each tossing six innings.

LP Pelletier blasted a lead-off solo shot in the bottom of the first, which proved to be the winning run in game three of the series.

The Titans loaded the bases in the second, with Urbaez flying out to the deepest part of the park in centre, as Poliquin managed to whether the Titans’ attack in the early going.

In his first start since Canada Day, Jandron settled in and gave the Titans a complete game, going six innings, allowing just one run on five hits, striking out seven, and suffering the unfortunate defeat.

As the Titans’ offence fell quiet in the late innings, James Bradwell looked for the final three outs in the seventh. Following a leadoff walk, the Titans in the blink of an eye loaded the bases with just one out. The Aigles turned for the lefty Christian Allegretti (save, 1) for the final two outs to face Jake Sanford and Taylor Wright. In the favourable left-on-left matchup, Allegretti sealed the deal by getting a strikeout and a flyout to close out the ballgame.

With the sour defeat, the Titans saw their five-game winning streak come to an end, while Jacob Talamante reached base in all three times he came to the dish in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Titans finish their series with Trois-Rivières tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. from Stade Quillorama. Following the final road game of the first half, the Titans return home on Friday to open a three-game set against the Quebec Capitales.
