Titans bats erupt in convincing win over Miners

June 4, 2022

Augusta, NJ – The Ottawa Titans (12-6) used a five-run fifth inning to take game one of their three-game series over the Sussex County Miners by a 11-5 final on Friday night.

After both sides went scoreless through the first three, the Titans used a base hit from Clay Fisher to drive in the game’s opening run in the fourth.

The Titans rallied with two outs in the top of the fifth, scoring five times, pushing the lead to 6-0. In the process, the Titans sent 11 batters to the plate.

Righty Jack Alkire (ND, 0-2) got the ball for the Titans and didn’t surrender a hit through four complete. After the bottom of the Miners’ order strung together four straight hits, getting the home side on the board, spoiling the perfect game bid.

As the inning continued, the Miners loaded the bases as the Titans turned to Grant Larson (win, 3-0) with just one out. The lefty got Carson McCurdy swinging, to then face Cito Culver with two outs. In an 0-2 count, Nilo Rijo took off for home and was thrown out to end the inning, halting the Miners’ momentum.

Jake Sanford used another multi-hit game on Friday to drive in a run in the seventh, putting the game out of reach. Along with a three-hit game from Sanford, Mitsuki Fukuda, Will Zimmerman, and AJ Wright tallied two hits each in the victory.

Jose Taveras (save, 1) came on to work the final four innings, allowing two runs on three hits, and striking out a pair to lock down the win.

The Titans have now pushed their winning streak to a season-best three games.

The Ottawa Titans continue their three-game series against the Sussex County Miners on Saturday evening in Augusta, New Jersey. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. from Skylands Stadium. The Titans return home on Friday, June 10 at 6:30 p.m. to take on the Empire State Greys.
