Titans lose late lead to end weekend

July 31, 2022

Schaumburg, IL – Ahead 1-0 entering the bottom of the eighth, the Ottawa Titans (40-27) allowed three runs, dropping the series finale 3-1 to the defending Frontier League champion Schaumburg Boomers on Sunday afternoon.

Going back and forth stranding runners aboard in the early going, Jacob Talamante put the Titans on the board with a sacrifice fly to left. Right-hander Aaron Glickstein (ND, 4-4) struck out seven over six and a third in the series finale.

Chris Burica (ND, 5-4) dealed on Sunday, ringing in seven innings of one-run ball. The Boomers recorded leadoff doubles in the second and the third but were unable to push across the equalizer.

Clint Hardy tied the score up at one apiece with a solo shot in the eighth to straight-away centre, knocking Burica out of the game. The big lefty struck out just one over seven innings in his thirteenth start of the season.

Grant Larson (loss, 5-3) was roughed up out of the bullpen, surrendering two runs on four hits. As the Boomers sent nine to the dish, Chase Dawson put the Boomers ahead with an RBI single, before Blake Grant-Parks scored one on a fielder’s choice.

Trailing for the first time and down to their final three outs, the Titans put the potential tying run aboard against Darrell Thompson (win, 2-0), who got Jackie Urbaez to roll a grounder to short for the fielder’s choice. Thompson tossed two shutout innings out of the bullpen, striking out three to record the victory.

In the loss, Jason Dicochea recorded three hits, while Jackie Urbaez extended his on-base streak to 23 consecutive ball games.

After an off day on Monday, the Ottawa Titans continue their road trip with the first of three against the Tri-City ValleyCats at 6:30 p.m. from Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on Tuesday. Following the series, the Titans return home on Friday for a nine-game homestand.
