Titans use quick start to beat Boulders, advance to Division Series

Pomona, NY – The Ottawa Titans used a trio of runs over the first two innings to defeat the New York Boulders 8-2 on Wednesday night, advancing to the FLDS.

Facing rookie right-hander July Sosa (loss, 0-1), the Titans jumped out in front with a two-run homer from Rodrigo Orozco, opening up the scoring.

The Titans added to their total with an RBI single from AJ Wright in the second, extending the lead to 3-0.

Not only staring at the dish, Wright made a highlight reel catch in the bottom of the third, ending the frame by making a grab up against the tarp down the left-field line in foul ground to retire the side.

Making his first Frontier League playoff start, Zac Westcott (win, 1-0) retired 10 of the first 11 he faced before a one-out single from Austin Dennis broke up the no-hit bid.

Danny Wirchansky took over for the Boulders in the third, with the Titans getting to the all-star in the fourth inning. Orozco brought home his third of the night with an RBI single to right, as a wild pitch later forced home another run, making it 5-0. Clay Fisher then laced a double to left, plating Orozco to add to the lead.

Holding the Boulders’ offence at bay, the Titans got a pair of RBI hits from Jason Dicochea and Wright in the seventh, pushing the advantage to 8-0.

Allowing only two hits through seven, Westcott served up a double to Tucker Nathans that was followed by a Ray Hernandez two-run homer to spoil the shutout bid.

Westcott finished the night going seven and two-thirds, allowing two runs, on four hits, walking one, and striking out three for the victory.

After Kyle Serrano got the only man he faced to end the eighth, Kevin Escorcia recorded the final three outs to send the Titans to the Division Series.

With the win, the Titans advance to the Frontier League East Division Series to face the Quebec Capitales. Game one of the best of three takes place in Ottawa on Friday at 6:30 p.m. All the action can be heard locally on CKDJ 107.9 and 94,5 Unique FM, while also being available worldwide at CKDJ.net and uniquefm.ca.
