Timely hits power Titans over Slammers

Joliet, IL – The Ottawa Titans picked up their first series win in franchise history, scoring a 6-2 victory Saturday over the Joliet Slammers.

Newly acquired centre-fielder Will Zimmerman opened up the scoring with a sac fly, playing Brendon Dadson who led off the second inning with a double.

Zimmerman comes to the Titans in a deal with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks of the American Association, where he hit .243 a year ago.

The Slammers got to their old teammate Tyler Jandron in the third and fourth, picking up their only two runs of the ballgame. Brylie Ware singled through the left side in the third, while Phillip Steering reached on a fielding error, plating the go-ahead run.

The Titans southpaw Tyler Jandron settled in after that and was fantastic, tossing six complete innings, giving up three hits, walking three, and punching out eight.

AJ Wright began the offensive onslaught with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth to put the Titans ahead for good. The Cherry Hill, New Jersey native finished the game going 4-5 with a double, home run, and three RBI.

In the seventh, Sherwood Park, Alberta native Scott Gillespie was called into the game for his pro debut and got the hook after facing the minimum after two runners reached. Manager Bobby Brown went to the bullpen and called in Kevin Escorcia who recorded a strikeout and rolled a ground ball to get out of the jam.

Will Zimmerman picked up his second RBI of the game in the eighth, singling to right.

After Escorcia pitched a clean bottom of the eighth, the Titans added two more in the ninth, courtesy of an RBI single from David Maberry. AJ Wright followed suit by popping out in foul territory, but, with nobody covering home, Brendon Dadson took the opportunity and scored the Titans’ sixth run.

Kyle Serrano was lights out in his lone inning of work in the ninth, fanning two batters, earning the Titans’ second win of the season.

The Titans finish up their three-game series with the Joliet Slammers on Sunday with right-hander Jack Alkire taking the bump. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m ET.

The Ottawa Titans open the home portion of the 2022 season on Tuesday, May 24 versus the Evansville Otters at Ottawa Stadium. First pitch for the inaugural home opener is at 6:30 p.m.
