Westcott powers Titans to series-opening victory over Grizzlies

May 28, 2022

Ottawa, ON – In his first start at Ottawa Stadium since September 2nd, 2019, Zac Westcott (win, 3-0) pitched into the eighth, only allowing one run as the Ottawa Titans (8-5) scored a 3-1 win to open the series with the Gateway Grizzlies on Friday night.

After the Weston, Florida native retired the first 10 Grizzlies he faced on Friday, Westcott served up the game’s opening run on Trevor Achenbach’s solo shot in the fourth. The homer for Achenbach put an end to 30 consecutive shutout innings for the Titans rotation.

The Titans responded with a pair in the bottom of the fourth off Grizzlies starter Matt Mulhearn (loss, 1-1) as AJ Wright was cashed in on a David Maberry RBI single through the left side.

Will Zimmerman stepped up next and drilled his second triple of the week into the alley in right-centre, plating Maberry from first.

Maberry added some insurance with an RBI groundout in the sixth, scoring Wright from third on a slow roller with the infield in.

As Westcott retired 10 of 11 Grizzlies from the fourth until the seventh, a one-out walk and single put runners at first and second for Achenbach in the eighth.

Bobby Brown went to the bullpen for the southpaw Kevin Escorcia, who got Achenbach looking and Isaac Benard swinging to get out of the jam.

Escorica got the side in order in the ninth to pick up the five-out save and fourth overall on the campaign.

The Ottawa Titans continue their inaugural six-game homestand on Saturday night against the Gateway Grizzlies at Ottawa Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m as Jack Alkire takes the bump.
