Eight-Run Third, Seven Doubles Power Titans to Win

Ottawa, ON - A season-high eight runs in the third inning powered the Ottawa Titans (21-16) to a 13-8 win over the Québec Capitales (27-9) on Saturday, setting up the rubber match.
Brandon Marklund (ND, 0-0) was the opening pitcher for the Titans and found himself in early trouble. Yuta Hamada worked a walk, and Kyle Crowl would send a single up the third base line, putting runners on the corners with no outs.
David Mendham would put the Capitales on the board early at 1-0 with a sac fly.
The Capitales would keep things rolling in the top of the second with a two-out rally. Sodai Shimizu got plunked, and Yuta Hamada would move him to third on a single up the middle. Kyle Crowl would get his second hit of the game on a single to left, making it 2-0.
Patrick Bauer (loss, 0-1) got the start for the Capitales and looked dominant through two innings, facing the minimum and striking out two.
The bats came alive for the Titans in the bottom of the third, starting with a Jake Steels double. Thomas Ferroggiaro would put the Titans on the board, sending a triple to the wall in centre, making it a 2-1 game. Jackie Urbaez then sent a fly ball to centre, scoring Ferroggiaro to tie the game at two.
With two outs, AJ Wright would send a double to right; Jackson Lyon and Dan Tauken would each walk, loading the bases. Taylor Wright gave the Titans the lead for good, putting a ground ball up the middle, scoring two to make it 4-2.
Daniel McElveny would drive in a run with a double, and on the first pitch, Jake Steels saw he would hit his second double of the game, scoring two, and making it 7-2.
Bauer's day would end, going two and two-thirds, allowing eight runs on six hits and two walks.
Chikara Igami would give up an RBI single to Mitsuki Fukuda, making it 8-2 and capping off the Titans' largest inning of the year. In total, the Titans sent 14 to the plate and struck for eight runs on eight hits, five of which were doubles.
Titans pitching struggled, giving up two runs in three consecutive innings. Dominic Puccetti (win, 4-1) went one and two-thirds, allowing two runs on a hit and three walks, while Kevin Miranda went two and a third, allowing four runs on six hits, and striking out four.
The Titans, only up two in the bottom of the fifth, extended the lead. Steels hit his third double of the game, and Fukuda would reach on an error, moving Steels to third and putting runners on the corners with no outs.
Ferroggiaro got his second RBI of the game, singling to centre and making it 9-6. Urbaez walked to load the bases, and both AJ Wright and Lyon would each hit sac flies, making it 11-6.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Titans would add some insurance against Boris Vecerka, striking on a balk and an RBI hit from Taylor Wright.
Michael Vilchez, Ted Stuka, and Brett Garcia combined to punch out four over three scoreless innings to preserve the win.
Taylor Wright went 2-for-5 while driving in three, Jake Steels had three doubles while bringing in two, and Thomas Ferroggiaro went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, and two RBI.
The Ottawa Titans end a three-game series with the Québec Capitales on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Ottawa Stadium. The series finale is Father's Day, in which fans can play catch on the field after the game with Dad. Next week, the Titans travel to Québec City before coming back home to start a six-game homestand with New Jersey and Tri-City.
