Offence Takes Centre Stage, Titans Split Set with Mud Monsters

Ottawa, ON - After a forty-five-minute weather delay, the Ottawa Titans (50-39) took a hard 23-14 loss against the Mississippi Mud Monsters (36-53) on Sunday afternoon, the most runs the Club has allowed in franchise history.

Evan Grills (loss, 6-1) had a rough start, allowing five runs in the first. He went three innings, allowing twelve runs (nine earned) on eleven hits, walking one, hitting two, and striking out three.

The Titans put up two runs in the bottom of the first to keep things close, but the Mud Monsters answered right back with two more in the top of the second to make it 7-2.

The bats cut the lead to 7-4 in the third, but the Mud Monsters blew the game open with a brutal seven-run rally in the top of the fourth.

In the home half of the fourth, the Titans put up four to keep the game in reach. Kaiden Cardoso lifted a sacrifice fly, Rainer Nuñez brought in two on an RBI double, and Hunter Stokeley picked up an RBI single to make it 14-8.

A six-run sixth for the Mud Monsters put them up by twelve and put the game out of reach.

The Titans' bullpen struggled. Ted Stuka, Liu Fuenmayor, and Christian Scafidi all allowed multi-run innings. Jack Kalisky and Brett Garcia were the only relief arms to go scoreless.

Brayden Sanders (win, 2-3) picked up the win, going two innings and allowing one run on one hit, issuing one walk.

Mud Monsters catcher Tevis Payne II had himself quite the afternoon, going an insane 6-for-6 with four RBI.

Kaiden Cardoso went 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI; Myles Smith went 3-for-4, crossing the plate four times, walking once, and driving in two. AJ Wright went 1-for-2, taking four free passes, and Rainer Nuñez continued the shine, going 3-for-6 with a double, home run, and six RBI.

The 23 runs allowed are the most in a game for the Titans since a 21-9 loss on May 20, 2022, in Florence. The 22 hits surrendered are also the most in a single game in team history.

Despite the loss, the Titans got help on the out-of-town scoreboard, as both Down East and Sussex County lost. The magic number for the Titans to clinch a playoff spot has dropped to five.

After a day off on Monday, the Ottawa Titans hit the road for a six-game road trip with the first of a three-game series against the New York Boulders on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. at Clover Stadium in Pomona, New York. After three in New York, the Titans battle the Québec Capitales over the weekend. The Club comes home September 1-3 to face Trois-Rivières as part of Fan Appreciation Week.
