Titans Come Up Short in Late Comeback Bid
OFFICIAL FRONTIER LEAGUE BOX SCORE
Ottawa, ON - A three-run ninth wasn't enough as the Ottawa Titans (50-38) dropped game five of a six-game series with the Mississippi Mud Monsters (35-53), falling 7-5 on Saturday night.
Yohanse Morel (ND, 3-2) opened the game for the Titans, going two strong innings, allowing no hits, no walks, and striking out one.
The Titans got on the board first as Myles Smith doubled in the second to make it 1-0.
Michael Vilchez (loss, 5-2) was the first arm out of the bullpen and struggled. He allowed a season-high five runs on five hits, walking one, as the Mud Monsters took a 5-1 lead.
Down 5-1 heading into the fourth, Dominic Puccetti took the mound and looked sharp. He went three innings, allowing just one run on three hits, not walking a batter. Puccetti has struggled with command this year, and this was his first outing allowing no free passes.
With runners on the corners in the sixth, Thomas Ferroggiaro sent an RBI single to make it 6-2.
The Mud Monsters picked up another run in the seventh, and the Titans headed into the bottom of the ninth down by five.
Jackie Urbaez walked, while AJ Wright doubled to put two in scoring position with one out. Rainer Nuñez picked up his fourth hit of the night, driving both in to make it 7-4.
Smith singled, putting two on and the tying run at the plate. Hunter Stokely singled to make it 7-5 with two on, but the Titans couldn't capitalize and dropped the contest.
The Titans left a total of 12 runners on base. They had the bases loaded in the second and later in the sixth but failed to cash in runs.
Tyler Campbell (win, 5-5) tossed six innings, allowing two runs on nine hits and three walks while punching out four.
Hunter Belton (save, 1) picked up a three-inning save, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two.
Former Jays farmhand Rainer Nuñez continued to rake, going 4-for-5 with two RBI. Myles Smith went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and an RBI. Hunter Stokely went 2-for-5 with an RBI, and Thomas Ferroggiaro went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks.
The Titans' magic number for a playoff spot at the time of this Game Recap sits at six. It could shrink to five, awaiting results of Down East and Trois-Rivières.
