Eighth-Inning Outburst Gives Titans Split with Miners

Ottawa, ON - The Ottawa Titans (38-30) notched a 12-5 victory over the Sussex County Miners (32-36) on Thursday night, after putting up seven runs in the final third of the game.

The Titans got on the board first, putting up two runs in the first inning. Thomas Ferroggiaro scored on a wild pitch, and Myles Smith brought in another on a single to left.

Kaleb Hill (ND, 4-4) got the ball for the Titans, retiring the first five batters he faced. Dean Ferrara sent a solo shot to right in the second to make it 2-1, as the Miners stranded two on base.

In the third, Taylor Wright doubled on a line drive to right, extending the Titans' lead to 3-1.

The Miners tied things up in the fourth, bringing in two runs on a Mahki Backstrom long ball.

This tie didn't last long. Hunter Stokely and Caleb Burr each singled, and Mitsuki Fukuda laid down a sacrifice bunt to put two in scoring position. Austin Gurney singled to give himself his first career hit and RBI in the Frontier League.

The Miners answered right back in the fifth as Gabriel Maciel lifted a sac fly to tie the game back up at four apiece.

The Titans again took the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Stokely picked up another hit, driving in AJ Wright to make it 5-4.

The Miners picked up their final run of the night in the sixth to tie it up at five.

Myles Smith doubled in the seventh to make it 6-5, and Caleb Burr extended the Titans' lead to make it 7-5.

The Titans put up a massive five-run eighth, putting Titans fans on their feet. AJ Wright knocked in two with a double, Smith plated his fourth run of the game with a base hit, and Stokely drove in one with a single.

Ted Stuka (win, 3-0) picked up the win, going one and a third, and Heitor Tokar tossed the final frame, going three up, three down.

Thomas Ferroggiaro, Jackie Urbaez, and AJ Wright each picked up multi-hit games. Myles Smith went 3-for-5 with four RBI and the go-ahead double in the seventh. Hunter Stokely went 4-for-5 with 2 RBI, getting his first four-hit game in professional baseball.

Taking five of the nine games in the season series, the Titans remain in the final playoff spot by six games over the Miners, entering the final day of July.

The Ottawa Titans continue a seven-game homestand with the opener of a three-game series against the Brockton Rox on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Ottawa Stadium. Tomorrow is Theme Night (Taylor's Version), in which the first 1,000 fans through the doors will receive a Titans-inspired friendship bracelet. There are also post-game fireworks.
