Titans earn impressive victory, take series over Boomers

July 31, 2022

Schaumburg, IL – The Ottawa Titans (40-26) earned their 40th win of the season in comeback fashion, scoring a 6-4 victory over the Schaumburg Boomers to take the series on Saturday.

Following a one-out single in the bottom of the first off Zac Westcott (win, 8-1), Clint Hardy managed to reach third base on two errors by the Titans’ defence. Mike Hart opened the scoring with an RBI ground out to second, making it 1-0 for the Boomers.

Japanese righty Shumpei Yoshikawa (loss, 4-8) was cruising over the first three innings, retiring the first seven he faced on the night. the righty ended up going six, striking out eight in the loss.

After Kai Moody drew a one-out walk in the third, the Titans strung together three straight hits to take the lead, capped off by RBI singles from Jackie Urbaez and Matt Feinstein.

As Westcott retired the first two in the bottom half of the third, a walk to Braxton Davidson set up a go-ahead two-run homer from Blake Berry, giving the Boomers back the lead at 3-2.

Going quietly in the middle innings, AJ Wright put the Titans ahead 4-3 with a two-run double to left-centre of Yoshikawa. the double for Wright was his fifteenth of the season, while also improving to 44 RBI on the campaign.

The Boomers turned to Thomas Nicoll in the seventh, who tossed a pair of wild pitches, which allowed Rodrigo Orozco to score. Later in the inning, Jake Sanford provided some much-needed insurance with an RBI single up the middle, making it 6-3.

Westcott finished the night in the seventh after allowing a one-out triple to Chase Dawson, the Frontier League’s single-season record holder for triples in a season with his nineteenth, who came all the way around to score on an E4. The Titans starter finished the night going six and a third, allowing four runs, two earned, on six hits, striking out four. Wescott at one point retired nine in a row, on route to his eighth victory of the season.

The pitching staff locked down the series win with two and two-thirds of shutout ball from the bullpen, as Gavin Sonnier, Grant Larson, and Kevin Escorcia (save, 11) finished the job.

Taking their sixteenth series of the season, the Ottawa Titans go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon against the Schaumburg Boomers at 1:00 central time at Wintrust Field. After the series, the Titans have Monday off, before opening a three-game set with the Tri-City ValleyCats on Tuesday.
