Early Hole Sinks Titans in Road Trip Opener

Crestwood, IL - Kicking off inter-conference play for the first time this season, the Ottawa Titans (45-33) fell into an early deficit and could not overcome it, falling 9-6 to the Windy City ThunderBolts (40-39) on Tuesday night.
Kaleb Hill (loss, 4-5) got into trouble in the bottom of the first, walking three to load the bases. With two away, former Titans all-star Victor Cerny crushed a grand slam over the left field wall to put the home side ahead 4-0 in the early going.
Leaving the game after one due to injury, Hill allowed four runs on just one hit, walking three, in a season-low inning of work.
Heitor Tokar took over in the second, allowing three runs on four consecutive two-out knocks, seeing the ThunderBolts go up 7-0. Former Ottawa Titan Justin Fogel brought in one with a single, while Jared Beebe drove in the first two of three on the night with a triple down the right field line.
For a second consecutive game, the Titans' offence got off to a slow start, not getting a hit through five innings.
Down 8-0 entering the sixth, the Titans erupted for a five-run frame to get within three. Jackie Urbaez drew a bases-loaded walk against right-hander Tyler Biddinger (win, 4-2) to get the Titans on the board. Dipping into the bullpen, Austin Gurney and Nathaniël Lai connected for back-to-back two-run doubles.
After two innings from Tokar, Jack Kalisky allowed a run over two innings. Newcomer Christian Scafidi tossed a scoreless inning out of the bullpen in his debut, while Yohanse Morel allowed a run over two frames of work.
Taylor Wright opened the ninth inning with a leadoff solo homer for his team-leading 14th jack of the season.
Myles Smith reached three times in the loss, walking twice and reaching on a hit-by-pitch. Nathaniël Lai came off the bench for his first professional hit, driving in two with a double.
The back-to-back losses for the Titans are the first of their occurrence since early July.
The Ottawa Titans continue a six-game Midwest Conference road trip with the second of a three-game series against the Windy City ThunderBolts on Wednesday night at 7:35 p.m. ET at Ozinga Field in Crestwood, Illinois. After three games against the ThunderBolts, the Titans visit the Gateway Grizzlies over the weekend. The Titans return home on August 18th for a six-game series against the Mississippi Mud Monsters.
