Big innings lift Titans over Boulders

July 4, 2022

Pomona, NY – The Ottawa Titans (28-15) slugged their way to an impressive 13-6 victory over the New York Boulders on Sunday, salvaging the final game of the series.

Zac Westcott (win, 6-1) and Dan Wirchansky (loss, 3-3) went toe-to-toe through the first, as the pair traded three up three down frames.

After the Titans went down quietly in the second, Westcott recorded the first two outs of the bottom half as Chris Kwitzer stepped to the plate. The Boulders first baseman ripped a double and stood in scoring position for Gabriel Garcia, who hammered a two-bagger to left-centre, putting the home side in front.

The Titans took flight in the fifth as they scored five runs on four hits, with Matt Feinstein tying the game with an RBI single. After Taylor Wright plated the go-ahead run, Rodrigo Orozco cleared the bases with a single. On the Orozco single, two runs originally crossed, and the Boulders committed an E5 as Austin Dennis airmailed Garcia at second trying to nail Orozco. As the ball ended up in right, it allowed for Jason Dicochea to score.

As the Boulders loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom half, Al Reda ripped a triple to the wall in right-centre, making it a 5-4 game. Matt Terrones relieved Westcott to get the final out of the inning after the righty allowed four runs on Sunday, with only one being earned.

In the seventh, AJ Wright got in on the action with an RBI single to left, plating newcomer Brainy Rojas. After Taylor Wright reached, Jake Sanford belted his fourteenth homer of the season, making it 9-4.

Giovanni Garbella launched his second homer in as many days in the bottom of the seventh, cutting into the deficit, and making it 9-5.

The Garbella homer didn’t seem to disrupt the Titans’ offence as they piled on four more in the eighth, making it 13-5 against righty Luis De Paula.

Kaleb Schmidt allowed a run in the ninth and tossed two innings out of the bullpen to lock down the Titans’ victory, as the club snapped a three-game skid to avoid the sweep.

Taylor Wright stared on Sunday, going 3-for-5 with three RBI in the victory, while Zac Westcott picked up his team-leading sixth win.

The Ottawa Titans are back in action tomorrow to finish off the trip with a visit to the Tri-City ValleyCats at 6:30 p.m. The Titans return home for a seven-game home stand on Tuesday against the New Jersey Jackals at 6:30 p.m.
