Titans bats come alive, take down Boulders

June 25, 2022

Ottawa, ON – The Ottawa Titans (24-10) snapped their season-long three-game losing streak, defeating the New York Boulders by an 8-5 final on Friday night.

After Will Zimmerman doubled to left-centre with one out in the bottom of the first, Jake Sanford singled, giving the home side an early 1-0 lead.

In the second, Taylor Wright led off the frame belting a Luke Burton (ND, 0-1) offering over the wall in right for the solo shot. The homer marked Wright’s first career professional home run in his third game since joining the squad.

Right-hander Jose Taveras (win, 2-0) got the nod for the Titans on Friday and cruised through the first two innings. The Boulders got on the board in the third, as Jake MacKenzie cashed in a run. MacKenzie then came into score after stealing a couple of bags and plated on a Mitsuki Fukuda throwing error to tie the game at two.

Andy Hammond (loss, 2-1) came out of the bullpen to work the third and the Titans greeted the righty by loading the bases with nobody out. Taylor Wright scored AJ Wright with a sac fly, restoring the lead.

Brendon Dadson followed up by smashing a three-run homer over the wall in right to blow the game wide open at 6-2.

The Titans continued the pressure in the fourth as Sanford reached on a two-out walk, then scored on a Taylor Wright RBI single, making it 7-2.

Taveras surrendered a one-out triple to Chris Kwitzer in the fifth, as the Boulders cut into the lead with Austin Dennis recording an RBI grounding out.

The righty finished the night going five complete, allowing three runs (two earned runs) on four hits, walking five, and striking out two for the win.

Sanford added one more for good measure by hitting his tenth homer of the season to lead off the sixth, making it 8-3.

Jack Alkire came out of the bullpen for the Titans and allowed two runs, including a solo shot from Francisco Del Valle to lead off the eighth. The Boulders made things interesting, as it was an 8-5 game headed to the ninth.

The Titans relied on Nelson Gonzalez, who allowed a pair of one-out singles in the ninth. The righty picked up the save, getting two popouts to end the ballgame.

With the win, the Titans snap their three-game losing streak and trail the Quebec Capitales by one game for the top spot in the East Division.

The Ottawa Titans continue their six-game home stand, playing game two of their three-game series with the New York Boulders tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. from Ottawa Stadium.
