Grills Spins Gem; Titans Win Third Straight

Ottawa, ON - The Ottawa Titans (44-31) continued to roll, picking up a 10-2 win over the Trois-Rivières Aigles (27-49) on Friday night, powered by stellar pitching and offence.

Evan Grills (win, 5-0) got the start for the Titans, picking up his fourth quality start in a row. He allowed one run in each of the first and second innings, then settled in for five shutout innings, going seven total and striking out a season-high ten batters.

The offence came up big too. Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first with runners on second and third, Taylor Wright put one in play to tie things up with a groundout. Myles Smith doubled for the 15th time this season to bring home another, putting the Titans ahead 2-1.

The Titans then put up one run in each of the next four innings. Austin Gurney picked up an RBI single with runners on the corners to take back the lead at 3-2 in the second. Smith singled and scored on a two-base wild pitch and E2 in the third, Taylor Wright added an RBI single in the fourth, and Thomas Ferroggiaro knocked in one with a double in the fifth to extend the lead to 6-2.

The Titans weren't done yet, putting up four more runs in the eighth, powered by a three-run bomb off the bat of Smith. The former Reds farmhand has now driven in ten runs over his last five games.

Alongside stellar pitching from Grills, Liu Fuenmayor and Heitor Tokar each threw scoreless innings out of the pen.

Charles Lefebvre (loss, 2-4) took the loss, going four innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on two walks and nine hits.

The bats shined yet again for the Titans in their seventh win in the last eight games. Austin Gurney reached base five times, going 2-for-2 with three walks and an RBI. Jackie Urbaez went 2-for-4 with a walk, and Hunter Stokely picked up a pair of singles. Leading the charge was Myles Smith, going 3-for-5 with a double and a home run, driving in four.

The Ottawa Titans continue a short homestand with the second of a three-game series against the Trois-Rivières Aigles on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. at Ottawa Stadium. Tomorrow is Soirée Francophone. Next week, the Titans are on the road for a six-game Midwest Conference road trip with stops in Windy City and Gateway.
